As much as I miss being in San Francisco and all its opportunities, Modesto has its own hidden jewel (at least in my own eyes).
I’ve kept in contact with the physical therapy office where I worked last summer, so toward the end of the spring semester, I asked if I could return. On finals week, when things couldn’t get more hectic, I received a call saying I can start work the Monday I get back to Modesto. Not even two days since I came back to the clinic, my boss told me I would no longer just be bringing back and setting up patients—I would actually be working with them! I had less than a week to learn all of the exercises and how to explain them to the patients, as well as all of the logistics with fee sheets, re-evaluation checklists, S.O.A.P. notes, computer programs, etc. Luckily, one of the aides took me under her wing and the rest guided me along the way.
This week, I was, as they said, “thrown to the wolves.” Sure, I’m still making minor mistakes left and right, but all the patients I’ve had were very understanding. One of them could tell I was a little nervous on my first day, so he calmed my nerves by simply sitting still, without fidgeting, and talking to me about his life. Yesterday, I told my last patient of the day that I was only 19, and he said something along the lines of: “take your education seriously, and take advantage of every opportunity you can. You are still young; when I was your age, I was traveling and working all over the country and even Canada! I ended up in, of all places, San Francisco, where I married my wife when I was 27. Travel and enjoy life while you can. Go for it all.”
I was so flustered with his words, I forgot to give him his massage.
People always ask me if physical therapy is what I really want to do. And aside from all the cool technicalities of treatment, I love this side of the profession: the things your patients teach you. We really get to know who our patients are as people, not just as a subject to treat. How could I not want to do this as a career?
One of the aides yesterday said, “you know, if I were young and not a mom yet, I would do things all over again and become a DPT!” And my boss simply looked at her and said, “…so what’s stopping you?” And I realized just how fortunate we are of all the opportunities we have everyday—we just forget about them in the midst of routine.
I have to stop babbling and start showering. I have work in less than a half hour! But let me just say one more thing: I love this job.

Most definitely diggin this one. I think this is a nice change from that obnoxious blazing sun of glory banana suit yellow kit he’s had to wear for RM this season. ;]

I want to be a citizen of the world.
But seeing as how I can’t travel just yet, I figured I might as well try the next best thing: here’s to a virtual adventure via documentaries!
c/o my mom’s co-worker who randomly gave her 320482093840239857904 DVDs one day.
