I love my major.

The biggest difference I love between Biology and Exercise and Sport Science is the emphasis on the overall well-being of the students.  I felt like that when I was a bio major, all I could think of was passing my classes with decent grades and hope that I don’t burn out in the process.  My Motor Development professor (who, I do have to admit, is not the most difficult professor I’ve had) told us today that she cares more about us getting enough sleep than turning in a paper right on time.  My Kinesiology professor (who clearly loves and enjoys teaching this over last semester’s Stats class any day) told us today that we’d literally have to come to class in workout gear during lab days.  Obviously, grades still matter, and obviously, we’d still have to work hard for the grades we want.  But what I love most about being an ESS major (aside from the interesting coursework) is that they don’t want us to sacrifice our very human ability to move simply for academic success.  They really want to make sure we stay as healthy as possible, for as long as they can help it.

So with that, I’m also taking volleyball and soccer for my exercise courses this semester.  We only had a quick 15-minute class introduction for volleyball yesterday, but in soccer today, we immediately started playing.  The coach divided the class into two groups, the experienced and the newcomers.  You can guess which one I was in (hint hint: it’s not the first group).  And while I’m not entirely sure I was supposed to even have possession of the ball at the time, I’m proud to say I scored!  The goalkeeper was really tall and had a huge wingspan, so that was an even bigger surprise.  That may have all just been pure luck, but at least I’m not entirely uncoordinated!  Sort of.

Before or between classes, I squeeze in some gym time for weights.  It’s also Barrio season, which means dance practice!  This year, I’m in Spanish and Hip Hop, hooray!  I’m pretty terrible in Hip Hop, so hopefully Spanish will be a bit better for me.  To top things off, I have Zumba on Tuesday and Thursday nights.  I love this crazy hectic schedule already, despite practically having to live in my workout clothes.

On another note, remember that 10.1-miler I did last Friday?  That was probably a pretty bad idea (although I can’t say I regret it…) because my left foot—the same foot that bothered me during the summer—has been hurting since Saturday.  It’s gotten good enough that I was able to run normally on turf during soccer; actually, I only really feel it when I’m walking or standing for too long.  Hopefully this goes away though because I really don’t enjoy this limp thing going on.

Anyway, that was my little update.  I realize it’s only Tuesday, but it’s a miracle that I can say I only have one somewhat-boring class (which I have a feeling will get much better once we start picking up the pace).  Hopefully it stays this amazing the rest of the semester!
